Thank you PHI MU!

Blankets 4 Babies was a resounding success, thanks to the hard work and efforts of Phi Mu. At least six other organizations participated, the teamwork and solidarity was fantastic.

Blankets were handmade in memory of Rabbi Gaby & Rivki Holtzberg and in honor of their orphan son, Moshe. Blankets will be going to the St Francis NICU and an orphanage in Safed.

Tragedy in Mumbai & the Chabad Community
Moderator @ November 30, 2008 4:17:57 PM

After three days of dread and tension, waiting for news, with great sorrow and pain we learned of the fate of the hostages killed in the Chabad House in Mumbai, India.

The young couple, Rabbi Gavriel and Rivka Holtzberg o.b.m., traveled far from their homes and communities. They journeyed to Mumbai not for themselves but for the sake of others. They came to create a home and center of Jewish life for those Jews who live or travel to this corner of the world.

Running a Chabad House anywhere is a difficult task for any young rabbi and wife, especially in a place like India, far from every Jewish community. It is difficult to find kosher food, basic necessities of Jewish life, essentials that a young Chassidic couple needs. Nevertheless they went out and managed to build a center for Jewish life there.

Knowing what kind of homes they came from, I am certain that it is the education they received, which fostered in them this selfless dedication to assist others, to help Jews in need wherever they may be. They were educated in, and lived their lives by the teachings of the Lubavitcher Rebbe.

The Rebbe's words, relentlessly positive vision, and his personal example of leadership, expressed in 24/7 dedication to the Jewish people's needs, is what inspired these young people and gave them the strength to undertake the demanding task to which they devoted their lives.

When events like this happen, we have no way of understanding G-d's thinking or plan. One thing we do need to learn from this - to take the wonderful values this young couple had and emulate them and the life they led, by increasing acts of kindness and goodness, especially strengthening the three pillars of Judaism - Torah, prayer and acts of kindness such as charity.

This Friday, all women and girls should make an effort to light Shabbat candles (no later than 4:02 p.m. in the Hartford area) and continue to do so from now on. The power of those candles will light up our lives and hopes and our future.

Men should make an effort to accept the mitzvah of Tefillin. The Talmud teaches us that one of the special qualities of Tefillin is that it creates an awe of us in our enemies by demonstrating that G-d's power rests upon us. At a time like this, we should also make sure that we have kosher mezuzot on all our doors, both at home and in our workplace.

When G-d sees the Jewish people translating this tragedy into an increase in spirituality, holiness and observance, He will grant us protection, health, happiness and the ultimate redemption, with the coming of Moshiach now.

Shalom, and may we only share good news from now on.

Talmudic Ethics - A Course by the Jewish Learning Institute
Moderator @ November 15, 2008 10:20:23 PM

Talmudic Ethics: Finding Your Way to Good Decisions

Wednesdays, November 19, December 3 & December 10 7:30pm @ GSU Room 333

Sooner or later, it happens to almost everyone. You face a tough ethical decision, and you have to pick a course of action that will let you live with yourself. You feel like you are lost in a maze of possibilities, unsure which courses of action will lead you out of your turmoil, and which will leave you in a end of regret and self-recrimination.

Traditionally, Jews have looked to the Talmud to help them unravel tangled instincts. Because the Talmud recognizes that ethics is complex, subtle, and multi-valenced. It knows that complicated questions cannot be answered with a simple yes or no. And it offers discussion and perspective to help you make sense of life's most wrenching dilemmas.

In this course, you will tackle big issues like abortion, euthanasia, freedom of expression, and fair business practice. You will learn how the best Jewish minds struggled with hard choices for thousands of years, and trace their search for satisfying resolutions. And you will discover how Judaism offers a moral compass to help you find direction through the labyrinth of life.

We can't promise to provide you with all the answers. But we guarantee to give you a new way to think about the questions.

KDH presents: What do you really know when it comes to DATING JEWISH!?
Moderator @ March 30, 2008 8:15:41 PM

An evening of dialogue with Doron Kornbluth.

Author of the acclaimed book “Why Marry Jewish?”

“I am not religious; is it rational for religion to be a factor in my choice of soul-mate?”

“I just want to know one thing: beyond the paranoia,
aside from the ‘parent factor’, forget the rabbis, is there
one good reason to date or not date Jewish?”

As usual Dalia Kulek is preparing a delicious dinner.

Nonstop Passover Action!
Moderator @ April 8, 2007 12:57:59 PM

Passover with Chabad Chevra has been unbelievable! We have had nonstop action with one event after another. Dalia has been cooking 24 hours a day. Monday we had our first Seder on campus with over 30 in attendance. Tuesday at our second Seder over 45 people crammed into the Kulek basement for a Seder into the wee hours of the morning. Thursday's KDH offered more Passover food to the faithful. Wait there's more, on Friday night over 20 students showed up at the Kulek home for more Passover food and for Shabbad dinner.

We still have two days left to Passover. We look forward to more good times and intend on going out of Passover with a bang!

**Sorry, no photos. We do not take pictures on the holiday. We trust that the memories are in our hearts forever.***

Purim in Japan
Moderator @ March 5, 2007 6:07:30 PM

Chabad House of Greater Hartford  with the  support of other local organizations put on a fantastic Purim dinner. Purim in Japan was the theme. The food was great, the performance unbelievable and the guests were outstanding. There were over thirty students from UHA and UCONN. What a way to end the Purim holiday!

Looking forward to next year!

Wow! What an amazing party! Thank you everyone for making the party such a smashing success.

There were over one hundred registered guests in attendance. With at least another twenty or so who did not sign in.

Jousting, pie throwing, dancing, moon bounce, wings... all loads of fun.

A special thank you to all our volunteers. DJ Gil, you were out of this world!

Ilan A. we hope your shoulder is OK. Our prayers are with you and we are sorry you could not fully enjoy the party with us.

It was girls night at the Kulek's. Girls came over and baked funny looking hamentashen. Although they came out a little odd shaped, the hamentashen were absolutely delicious!
